The stone quilt is part of a process in which I sew fabric and stone into a ground of pockets laden with stones. I sculpt an object with which I will go down to a body of water and examine the body’s capacity to float and to sink.

In September 1939, the home of Virginia Woolf and her partner was damaged in the German bombings of London. Woolf continued to struggle with depression, and the couple traveled to Brighton to consult another doctor about her condition. In March 1941, Virginia Woolf took her own life, filling her pockets with stones and drowning herself in the River Ouse. “Dearest, I am sure I am going mad again. I feel we can’t go through another of those terrible times. And this time I shall not recover.” Can sinking beneath the weight of stone be a stance of resistance against injustice and war?
